We were both looking forward to the sights today and they did not disappoint! We arrived at Pompeii when it opened so we were the first group through the gate. However, within minutes there were hundreds of people all around us. It's amazing to imagine the incredible ingenuity these people had and seeing the ruins today brought that ancient city to life. From the baths, to the theatres, to the homes, to the roads with big stones put in for crosswalks, to the restaurants and even to the brothels, one can see that this city was alive and well. The ruins are so well preserved because the city was covered in ash rather than lava. The volcano erupted in 78 AD and the ruins were first discovered in the 1700s. There are still 60 acres that are under buildings, fields, etc. waiting to be unearthed.
